چکیده

Given a 2D binary image it is sometimes of interest to determine invariant topological properties, such as Euler number and holes which can reflect directly the complexity of a binary image. Counting the number of holes of binary images is an important problem arising in medical image processing, phototypesetting, petroleum exploration, earthquake prediction, and pattern recognition. In this paper, we propose and prove a new formula to detect and count the number of holes of binary images. A local labeling algorithm is proposed to make detecting holes more efficient. It is demonstrated that holes, as one important property of a binary image, are locally countable.

A Method for Filling Holes in Objects of Medical Images Using Region Labeling and Run Length Encoding Schemes

This paper presents a new method for filling holes in objects of binary images. Further it analyses the performance of other existing holes filling operations in binary form of medical images. Hole filling operations are widely used in medical image processing today. Almost all the medical image processing operations produce a binary form of original image at any stage. The binary images are no...

A Tabu Search Approach for the Reconstruction of Binary Images without Empty Interior Region

In this paper, we are concerned with a discrete tomography problem. We seek to reconstruct a binary image from its orthogonal projections, i.e, its horizontal and vertical line sums without interior black holes. We provide a tabu search approach to minimize the number of holes while satisfying the projections. We test our approach on some random binary images. Computational results show that th...

Topology Based Method of Segmentation of Gray Scale Images

The paper provides a method of image segmentation of binary and gray scale images. For binary images, the method captures not only connected components but also the holes. For gray scale images, there are two kinds of " connected components " – dark regions surrounded by lighter areas or light regions surrounded by darker areas.

Binary Black Holes at the Core of Galaxy Clusters

In this paper we push forward and exploit an analogy between the morphologies of the X-ray cavities observed in some galaxy clusters, and the optically deficient pointsymmetric bubbles occurring in some planetary nebulae (PNe). Point-symmetric PNe are thought to be shaped by stellar binary interactions; namely, the presence of a companion to the PN’s progenitor star is required. We suggest that...

Second-Order Statistical Texture Representation of Asphalt Pavement Distress Images Based on Local Binary Pattern in Spatial and Wavelet Domain

Assessment of pavement distresses is one of the important parts of pavement management systems to adopt the most effective road maintenance strategy. In the last decade, extensive studies have been done to develop automated systems for pavement distress processing based on machine vision techniques. One of the most important structural components of computer vision is the feature extraction met...
